Why the EU  Petitions Committee should be scrapped

The European Constitutional draft will make the role of the European Parliamentary Petitions Committee more central to address complaints. Unfortunately there are no guarantees that the Petitions Committee will act in an independent, let alone consistent, fashion. There is mounting evidence that they act in a political and therefore arbitrary fashion. As knowledge of this becomes more generally known it will undermine the public's confidence in this central plank of the Constitutional proposal.

A recent case provides disturbing evidence that the Petitions Committee failed to handle a serious human rights issue in an independent fashion and indeed failed to undertake any investigations. This has resulted in calls for the scrapping of the Committee.
